(Publication suspended. See LCR Books for current titles.) Lilies and Cannonballs Review (NYC, 2003-2009), more than a journal of belles lettres, was an experiment in print that sought to understand the law of opposites. Each of its six published issues aspired to a synthesis of contraries: aesthetically driven and socially conscious literature and art; traditional and experimental forms; crazy-man conservative and bleeding liberal views.
LCR was founded by Dan Connor (dancconnor.com) in 2003 and was grateful for the support and collaboration of Marc Connor (marcconnor.com), David Bagnall, and all contributors, subscribers, and donors.
Contributors to LCR came from all over the world and were 90% unsolicited. Critical reception was surprisingly warm, and friendly—even ecstatic—reviews appeared in publications throughout the country. The work published in LCR often received nods of commendation from the Best American anthology series (Essays and Nonrequired Reading) and numerous print publications and Web sites.
LCR was distributed nationally until the demise of its distributor in 2007. It has been indexed, when appropriate, by the MLA International Bibliography and the American Humanities Index. Memberships included the Council of Literary Magazines and Presses (CLMP) and the Council of Editors of Learned Journals (CELJ).
Truly independent, LCR never incorporated as a not-for-profit, took no public funding, tolerated no boards, and bowed to no institution, movement, or polity.
To bend the LCR tagline: We grew it, we kicked it.
"An energetic assemblage of poetry, short fiction, and artwork... Recommended." Home Planet News
"A surprisingly successful blend." Library Journal
"The work is intense, focused, vivid, and finely etched." Iconoclast
"LCR is not afraid to entertain and challenge, offer critique without bashing you over the head with the 'right answer.'" Literary Magazine Review
